The customer is a leading U.S. medical clearinghouse catering to more than 360 payers nationwide.

The Need

The clearinghouse used a FoxPro-based application to parse and report electronic acknowledgments from payers. (FoxPro is a legacy relational database management system and programming tool)
However, as clearinghouse transaction volumes and payer requirements grew, the customer felt the need to transition to a more modern technology. Importantly, as there was limited support to the legacy platform and integration gaps, day-to-day operations were hindered. Future scalability was also at risk.

The Challenge

  • FoxPro reaching end-of-life: The application faced risks associated with vendor support, security patches, and long-term viability. Due to the reliance on an unsupported legacy platform in a regulated domain, there were compliance risks.
  • Limited interoperability with modern web technologies: The customer found it challenging to integrate the FoxPro-based application with contemporary systems and tools.
  • Unoptimized, Undocumented Codebase: The codebase was not optimized for performance. Further, there were significant changes made over time to the code that were not consistently documented. These factors increased migration complexity.
